A young mixed team took on an older Brid team made up of Year 9 boys and pushed them all the way. Captain James Ellis (1) showed his liking for singles with a good win and Vicky Twamley (3) demoralised her hard-hitting opponent with a powerful display of ground strokes to chalk up another point. Sam Megginson (2) and Bex Harvey (4) played well against good opponents. The determination of our team was demonstrated as the deciding doubles were about to start. A heavy shower started and Malton walked on court, commenting that it was "more refreshing to play in the rain", while their counterparts cowered in the clubhouse. The relief on the Brid team's faces when they grabbed the final points to secure the win showed just how hard the Malton quartet had fought. In the doubles, Malton tended to start slowly, then mount strong comebacks and would have surely won longer sets. Features of the doubles play were: James's serve and net-play, Sam's court coverage and Vicky's authoritative call of "I've Got!". Good sportsmanship and some unstoppable deep returns made Bex the nominated player. How this ended up as a 6-2 defeat, I'll never know.
The Malton B team lost 5-3 in windy but sunny conditions at Brandesburton. Dominic and William won their singles, and they also won their doubles match against the second pair. The match was played in a very good spirit, with Rebecca and Vicky enjoying their matches. Dominic was the nominated player.
A great match played by both teams. Player of the match for Malton was Steph Young and for Hunmanby was Ellie.
Player of the match was Steph Young (for Malton) and Joe Butterworth (for Long Riston). Long Riston are newcomers to the league and were admirable losers on their first match of the season. They kept smiling all through the afternoon and showed excellent court etiquette, as did Malton. Well Done to all the players.
